Entry and admissions requirements; application procedure

You can find further information on the entry and admission requirements for doctoral research as well as on applying to do a PhD in the various faculties at Bielefeld University in the doctoral degree regulations of the respective Faculties.

Enrolment

Depending on their status, it is possible for doctoral candidates at Bielefeld University to enrol either as doctoral students doing individual doctoral research or as a doctoral student in a doctoral degree programme. Researchers enrolled at the University receive a folder (a so-called Leporello) with various semester certificates, an official identification card and the semester ticket for public transport in the region. Enrolment takes places in Dezernat II, Student Administration. You are required to provide evidence of your previous degrees as well as proof that you have a supervisor for your doctoral research. If you are participating in a doctoral degree programme you are also required to provide evidence of admission to the doctoral degree programme. You are also have to provide evidence that you have health insurance and to pay the administration fees leveled by the university (Sozialbetrag).

Doctoral researchers do not have to pay tuition fees (Studienbeiträge).

An online enrolment aid (in German) is available here.

Alternatively, an English-language enrolment form can be downloaded here.

Doctoral researchers who for various reasons do not wish to enrol at Bielefeld University are registered on Faculty lists; this usually takes place in the Faculty examination offices. The faculty administrations can offer you further advice on the procedure.
